…or the best of both worlds? In this very 2016-coded fantasy-subplot romcom starring Hwang Minhyun and Kim Sohyun, a LOT of interesting themes were explored. Harbouring a very clichéd storyline of a human lie-detector female lead and a murder suspect main lead who has been wrongly accused all his life and their very apparent romance, the drama aimed to and (almost) was able to show us way more.
I enjoy kdramas as they portray relationships other than romantic ones really well and this one was no less — the balance of the different aspects of this drama was what made me fall in love with it originally. The paradigm of Solhee's parents (especially her mom) realising that they still love each other and how the gradual change was very much visible throughout, Solhee's relationship with her co-workers Yeseul and Chihoon (extremely underrated friendship, in my opinion) and the stories of the town store-owners — even if some of them felt rushed and unnecessary.
The incorporated murder mystery in the drama was undoubtedly a very significant aspect of the plot — and not going to lie, it was done better than I had anticipated and I enjoyed every second of it. I had my inklings on who the actual murderer turned out to be and the plot twist was a good one — I wouldn't have thought of that in a million years. And as people argue, the resolution of the mystery did turn out to be a little anti-climactic and they could have definitely done better but for a k-drama inherently marketed as a romcom, I think it was great, and had us hooked throughout the duration of the show as new leads kept showing up. So major props to them for that!
About the leads!! I know Kim Sohyun from her various and varied previous roles, but this is Minhyun's first romantic lead role (yes live on doesn't count in this case, but I love that one with all my heart). Minhyun got a lot of backlash prior to the airing of My Lovely Liar because people weren't sure if he was going to be able to pull it off or not (very uncalled for, if you ask me like the shit that some idol-actors get is so unprovoked) But after watching the show, he definitely nailed his role to a significant extent. Kim Doha (Kim Seungju) is a social recluse who goes partially into hiding because of his trauma of being wrongly accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend and Minhyun's very introverted and meek self definitely helped him bring that role to life. It was kinda amusing how quickly his personality did a turnaround after meeting Solhee, very unrealistic if you ask me, but it was trivial enough for me to ignore that and move on.
The ending was also pretty satisfactory and the resolution of the plot was very clean in a poignant manner. Finding out Doha's ex's last message to him before she died, to her regaining her powers only to stop her business as a liar hunter, I think everything played out very well and I will miss my 소용없어 거짓말 mondays and tuesdays <3
The OST was also pretty enticing throughout the show to the point that I memorised some of them off by heart!! I enjoyed the random Fireworks by Aimers plugin towards the end, I definitely was not expecting that!! My favourite OSTs in the show include Spoiler by VIVIZ, Alarm by Minhyun and RUN by Woody
